MADISON - Yvonne Marie Turner died at home on October 3, 2022. While it goes without saying, she was surrounded by the love and deep gratitude of her family after valiantly living her best life despite the significant difficulties of dementia in the last several years.
Yvonne was born September 6, 1935, on the family farm outside of Palmyra, IL. She was the sixth of eight children of Lula and Ivan Crum.
Following the death of her mother when Yvonne was 5 years old, she was raised by her dad and her older sisters. Yvonne married her high school sweetheart, L. Roger Turner, and they moved to the big city of Champagne IL and started to raise their family. She assisted the family to move several times as Roger's career offered new opportunities and eventually settled into working and raising her kids in Madison where she lived for the past 56 years.
Yvonne was a devoted and wonderful mother, and if it is possible, an even better grandma and great grandma. She is known as Aunt Von by her nieces and nephews, who have always been an important part of her life.
Yvonne loved to be outside; cross country skiing and biking gave her great joy. She completed over 20 RAGBRAI bicycle trips across Iowa, and after she retired from Dane County Library Service rode with the MACC Fund bike ride from Washington DC to Madison. 1500 miles in 5 weeks, riding the last day wounded by a serious dog bite.
Yvonne organized camping adventures for her family all over the US and made sure her grandkids had opportunities to enjoy the natural world that she loved so much. After retirement, Yvonne and Roger traveled extensively, and loved traveling through Alaska, the Gaspe Peninsula, Yellowstone (in the winter!), Maine, and many other areas. They traveled to Europe several times including a trip to follow the Tour de France.
Yvonne loved spending time at "the cabin" where she created her own trail system for skiing. She would walk for miles in pursuit of morel mushrooms, and always generously shared her haul. Yvonne was a great gardener, enjoyed cooking and developed a great fondness for spicy HOT foods. She ended almost every day with a good book and was a faithful user of the library system.
Yvonne was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, L. Roger Turner. In the last years of his life, Yvonne worked hard to make sure Roger had the assistance he needed and took great care of him. In return, Roger offered Yvonne support and assistance as her biggest fear came to be and she began to experience dementia. The two of them together took on life's many challenges, generally with good humor and always with love for each other.
Yvonne was also preceded in death by her daughter-in-law Lois Turner, her sisters Mary Frances Hunt, Dorothy Wiser and Etta Frank and her brothers Ivan and Donald Crum.
Yvonne is survived by her children, Scott (Jeanne), Kim (Melissa Mulliken), Lori Frisch (Tom), Kelly Rehbeck (Robert); her grandchildren Aaron, Craig (RaeAnn), Sarah (Scott) and Paul; her great-grandchildren Brian and Olivia, sisters Lavina and Lou Ann and loving nieces and nephews.
Yvonne's family offers their thanks and appreciation for the kindness and attention of friends and family who visited, brought flowers, sent cards, and generally lifted her up in the last few years. At Yvonne's request, no services will be held.
