Howard R. Steinmann, age 92, died Tuesday, April 9, 2013.
Howard was born on June 15, 1920 in Monticello, the son of John and Martha Steinmann. He met his wife, Gladys Bayrhoffer, while still in high school and they married in 1941, beginning a life together that lasted more than 69 years.
After graduating from Marquette University, Howard served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered on Iwo Jima. He then returned home to Monticello where he and Gladys raised their children, Jim, Mic, and Sue. Howard was a partner in Karlen and Steinmann Lumber Company and a director of the Bank of Monticello. He worked as a specifications writer with his brother, John Steinmann, at Steinmann Architects, John Flad and Assoc., and architectural firms in Seattle and Los Angeles. Howard was a Past President of the Construction Specifications Institute of America.
Howie and Glady eventually moved to Madison, then to Seattle and Los Angeles, returning to Madison for retirement. During this time they traveled worldwide, and Howie took up woodworking, making lamps and furniture, much of which incorporated Glady's stained glass art.
Howie is survived by his children, Jim (Jan) Steinmann and Mic (Allison) Steinmann of California and Sue (Bill Weege) Steinmann of Arena, and grandchildren, Kim and Alyssa. He was preceded in death by his wife Gladys; parents John and Martha Steinmann; brother John and infant sister Jane Ann.
To honor Howie's life and friendship a memorial service will be held on Friday, April 26, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. and a luncheon to follow, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Parish, 602 Everglade Drive, Madison.
