Gerald C. Sorensen passed away November 9, 2024 at UW Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin with family by his side. The eldest of three children, Gerry was born November 13, 1936 in Rochester, Minnesota to Gordon and Virginia (Weinrich). Gerry met his devoted wife of 65 years Sonja (Anderson) at Grinnell College in Iowa. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota, earning a PhD in 1966. Gerry and Sonja eventually settled their young family in Glen Ellyn, Illinois in 1971.
Gerry edified countless students as an English Professor at the University of Illinois in Chicago for 35 years. He spent his last 20 years in Madison, Wisconsin, where he and Sonja retired to help raise their grandchildren. He was an accomplished scholar, a skilled gardener, and a loving brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend. Gerry touched many lives through his generosity, wit, and withering appraisals.
Gerry is survived by his wife Sonja, sister Phyllis Adams (Charles); daughter Nancy and son-in-law Richard Johnson; son Erik and daughter-in-law Maureen (O’Connor); grandchildren Sean Sorensen, Linnea Sorensen, and Owen Johnson; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Gordon (Sandy).
Gerry will live on in our memories. A celebration of life will be held by the family at a later date.
In lieu of flowers or memorials, Gerry would encourage you to plan more time with your family and friends.
