MADISON - David Cartter, age 67, died on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at Agrace Hospice Care following a long and hard-fought battle with leukemia. He was born on November 7, 1946 in Black River Falls, WI but lived most of his life in Madison. He graduated from East High School and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Gail; two daughters, Giene (Ryan) Keyes and Amy (Peter) Arzamendi; six grandchildren; four sisters; and two brothers. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Margaret Cartter, and two brothers.
Dave deeply loved his family. He delighted in every one of his daughters' accomplishments. He enjoyed attending grandchildren's sporting events, school and band concerts, and was an assistant coach for his grandson's baseball team in Monticello.
In addition to family, Dave's passions were traveling, road trips on his motorcycle, reading about history, and enjoying the company of friends. He traveled with motorcycle friends many times from one end of the country to the other, including Canada and Alaska. We took many road trips to Florida, Texas, California, Wyoming, Arizona, and all states in between. He loved his breakfasts with friends.
He retired in 2000 after 30 years with the Dane County Sheriff Department, after which he worked at the Dane County Regional Airport for several years. Dave served in the Army, the Army National Guard, and the Air Force Air Guard.
Funeral services will be held on May 19, 2014 at 12:00 noon at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 701 Bear Claw Way, Madison. Visitation will be held at the church before the service from 10:00 - 11:30 am.
Dave's family would like to thank the doctors and staff at the UW Carbone Cancer Center and the Belleville Family Medical Clinic, the nursing staff on the 8th floor of Meriter Hospital, and the staff at Agrace Hospice Care. They all provided compassionate and understanding care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
