Amelia “Amy” Gurina Gilmore, age 74, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, December 31, 2023, in Madison, WI. She was born November 7, 1949, to the late Harold J “Hap” and Violetta “Vi” Sophie (Smith) Nelson, in Portage, WI. Amy was one of ten children: Billie, Bonnie, Cherokee, Connie, Gunnar, Knute, Matt, Robert “Bob”, and Sonja.
Amy is survived by her son, Robert, and his wife Christina Gilmore. She is also survived by her grandsons, Eythan Gilmore, Trystan Smith, and their mother Cora Smith.
Amy grew up in Rio, WI where her parents ran the local movie theatre. Her family lived on a farm where she used to train and ride horses. Later, she moved to Madison, WI. She raised her son, Robert “Bobby”, in Madison, WI and later in Whitefish, MT. Amy was a 911 dispatcher in Whitefish and Kalispell, MT. When her grandson, Eythan, was born, she moved to Joplin, MO, and later retired.
Amy enjoyed the outdoors, the mountains, and camping with her dog Ralph. If she wasn’t rooting for her favorite team, The Green Bay Packers, she would be on the sidelines, cheering on her grandsons during their sports games. Amy’s greatest pride and joy was her son and her two grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin in Amy’s honor.
